Kerala’s Boats Bring Books to People
From a library on a passenger boat to a free collection of 975 books in Kasaragod, these efforts are helping bring reading closer to people.
A Library on a Boat? How Kerala Is Making Reading More Accessible
In Kerala, boats are an important part of everyday life. Many people use them to travel between towns and villages, especially in areas connected by rivers and backwaters. Now, some of these journeys are also bringing people closer to books.
A Library on a Passenger Boat
In 2022, students from A B Vilasom Higher Secondary School in Muhamma helped start a library on a passenger boat travelling between Muhamma and Kumarakom in Alappuzha district.
The boat library had around 300 books in Malayalam and English. Passengers could pick up a book, read during the journey and return it when they reached their destination. The idea turned an everyday boat ride into an opportunity to read. It also encouraged passengers to use their travel time to discover books and authors.
A Library at a Houseboat Terminal
In Kasaragod, teacher and poet Fareena Kottappuram started another reading initiative called Velicham Library at the Kottappuram houseboat terminal. She began with books from her own collection. When visitors showed interest, more people started donating books and supporting the initiative.
By April 2026, the library had grown to 975 books in Malayalam and English. People can borrow these books for free. The library gives residents and visitors a place to read while they spend time at the terminal.
Bringing Books into Everyday Life
Both initiatives show that a library does not always need to be inside a school or a separate building. A passenger boat can become a place to read during a journey. A houseboat terminal can become a space where people discover books and share their love of reading.
By making books available where people already travel and gather, these initiatives are helping reading become part of everyday life. Sometimes, bringing people closer to books starts with a simple idea.
